Rosacea

Rosacea

Rosacea is a common, inflammatory skin condition that makes your face look red or flushed.  You may also experience small pus-filled bumps that can look like acne or other skin problems.

Although rosacea can strike at any time, it tends to occur more in early to mid-adulthood.

What are the symptoms?

Blushing, flushing or redness of your cheeks, nose, chin or forehead

Persistent redness

Visible blood vessels on the face (Telangiectasia)

Bumps or pimples on the face that might sting

Red or irritated eyes

You may also notice a thickening of the skin, especially around the nose. This symptom tends to be more common in men.

Rosacea triggers

It is important to understand what triggers your rosacea so that you can try and avoid these triggers.  Common triggers include hot or cold weather, coffee, alcohol, spicy foods, sun exposure, hot baths and certain medications or skin care products.  Keeping a diary is a good way to learn what triggers your symptoms.

Skin care for Rosacea

You should be careful to avoid any topical products that sting or make your rosacea worse.

A gentle skin care routine focussing on repairing, strengthening and maintaining the heath and integrity of the skin barrier is best.

Some products that may be beneficial include Ultraceuticals B2 Hydrating Serum and Synergies DermaCalm.   The B2 Hydrating Serum contains hyaluronic acid and 2 types of vitamin B (niacinamide and panthenol).  This product is anti-inflammatory, so it works to calm redness and repair the skin’s barrier.  It is also incredibly soothing and hydrating.

DermaCalm is a soothing and repairing moisturising lotion containing a special peptide to reduce the discomfort of itch, heat and irritation while reducing the appearance of redness.

Take time when introducing products to check for reactions and remember to include a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection to protect the skin from sun exposure.

Treatment Options for Rosacea

Because the signs and symptoms of rosacea vary from one individual to another, the first step is always a consultation so that an appropriate treatment plan can be developed.

Some treatment options we offer include:

BBL (BroadBand Light) therapy treatments

Laser (DermaV or VBeam) treatments

LED light therapy treatments

Skin Peels

Oral and topical medications

Skin care

Is there a cure for Rosacea?

Unfortunately, there is no cure, but you can improve your chances of avoiding remission by avoiding your flare-up triggers, using appropriate skin care products including sunscreen and by having maintenance treatments.
