Using the elos (electro-optical-synergy) technology, involves utilising intense pulsed light (IPL), as well as radio frequency (RF) to even out the skin tone, stimulate collagen production and reduce pore size. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect which can help settle symptoms of rosacea.
After seeing the doctor to discuss what may be achieved, settings are prescribed, with the standard regimen usually involving a series of two to five treatments, two weeks apart. These sessions are booked with a registered nurse.
Half an hour prior to the treatment a topical local anaesthetic cream is applied. This helps reduce the sensation of heat that is felt during the procedure, allowing more comfort during the treatment. A machine that blows refrigerated air may also be employed during the procedure. The level of discomfort felt varies, with most patients tolerating the treatment extremely well.
After effects of a treatment include patchy redness, and as the topical anaesthetic wears off a feeling of warmth can usually be felt. Some pigment and freckles will become darker and slowly fade or flake off over the following two weeks. Occasionally some swelling or scabbing may occur.
Studies have shown that after 10 years of maintenance therapy with IPL (once or twice a year), the skin looks younger under the microscope than when the patient began (and was 10 years younger).
It is essential that a broad spectrum SPF30 or higher sunscreen be used whenever a light based treatment is carried out to continue to protect the skin from the suns harmful rays. The skin is not made more sensitive to the sun by this procedure. Makeup can be applied following the procedure and skin care can continue as normal.
What about resurfacing treatments?
The Matrix RF treatment may be used for smoothing fine lines, promoting textural changes within the skin, reducing the appearance of sun damage and acne scarring.
