Falling hormone levels due to age (menopause), surgery, chemotherapy or breast-feeding may lead to a deterioration in the thickness and resilience of vaginal and surrounding tissues as well as necessary moisture production. This may cause feelings of itchiness, dryness or burning as well as pain during intercourse. Some may also find it makes them prone to urinary incontinence, recurrent infections, or a degree of prolapse, although other factors may also influence these symptoms.

Some women are able to take hormone treatments to improve these problems, however, some will be unable or unwilling to do so because of other medical or genetic concerns. For those using topical hormone creams, this should be ceased 3 days before laser treatment, if possible.

FAQs About CO2RE® Intima

What is vaginal atrophy?
As hormone levels drop through either menopause or cancer treatment, the tissues of the vagina and surrounding areas become thinner, the blood supply decreases and the normal secretions also reduce. This can result in itchiness or other unusual sensations as well mild stress incontinence and painful intercourse.
What is CO2RE® Intima and its benefits?
CO2RE® Intima is a laser treatment which stimulates the circulation to increase in the vagina which then produces a greater thickness in the walls which are therefore more substantial and support the other organs better. Secretions are normalised in amount as well as constituents.
How does CO2RE® Intima work?
The CO2RE® Intima treatment uses small points of laser energy to stimulate the lining of the vagina to produce more cells to make supportive tissue as well as greater degrees of lubrication. Most women will require 3-treatments for long-term improvement. The majority of women will subsequently benefit from a yearly top-up treatment.
Will CO2RE® Intima work for me?
If your symptoms are due to vaginal atrophy, then the treatment should improve things. If your symptoms are more related to muscles or other concerns, then it will likely be less successful.
Is CO2RE® Intima safe?
The laser is only treating tiny amounts of tissue with large areas left between these spots. It therefore settles very quickly after the treatment with minimal disruption to your lifestyle.
How long will CO2RE® Intima treatment take?
The treatment usually takes 5-10 minutes. Most women describe the sensation as a mild vibration.

Some women will also benefit from some treatment to the tissues outside of the vagina. As this tissue is more sensitive, some anaesthetic cream would be applied prior to the treatment in these cases.

Will CO2RE® Intima treatment hurt?
A vibration sensation is felt internally. On the outside of the vagina, if treated, some anaesthetic cream is used prior to the treatment as this area tends to be more sensitive. Most patients find the treatment more comfortable then a Pap smear as it is a smaller instrument.
What happens after the CO2RE® Intima treatment?
After the treatment, most women will feel a little “different” down below, similar to after a Pap smear, with perhaps some additional warmth. Those with very thin, fragile tissues may notice some spotting but this is usually just with the first treatment as the tissues become more resilient after the treatment.
What care after CO2RE® Intima treatment is recommended?
We ask that you do not swim, douche or have baths for a few days afterwards as well as avoiding intercourse. There may be some self-limiting spotting for a short time.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Prior to treatment, a normal Pap smear must have been performed within the last 2-years. Routine gynaecological care will be resumed following treatment through your GP or gynaecologist.
