Choosing your cosmetic practitioner

With cosmetic procedures becoming more common and clinics popping up everywhere, it has never been more important to make sure you do your research before choosing a practitioner.

While it may seem daunting at first and the Internet is clogged with so much contradictory information, it’s best to use the KISS principle – Keep It Simple and Straightforward.

Here is a simple list of questions to ask:
• What qualifications do you have?
• How long have you been doing this particular treatment?
• Do you have any before and after photos I can look at?
• Do you attend regular training courses?
• Are you a member of a cosmetic college?

Word of mouth or a personal reference from someone who has had a similar procedure done is always a great place to start, but ultimately the right practitioner is someone you trust, who understands you and who communicates well with you.

Of course, it is important that your doctor is suitably qualified and part of a professional organization. I am a Fellow and past Board Member of the Cosmetic Physicians College of Australasia, the leading representative body for medical practitioners practicing non- or minimally-invasive cosmetic medical treatments in Australasia.

But don’t stop there! Lately there have been media reports of some cosmetic procedures using dermal fillers that have resulted in terrible side effects, including necrosis (tissue being cut off from blood supply and dying) and blindness. While these outcomes are very rare, it is important to make sure any products being used are approved for use in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). You may not know that dermal fillers are prescription only products and must be prescribed by a doctor. So, even though these types of results are extremely few and far between, your practitioner should still explain the risks associated with your procedure and make sure you understand them before you proceed.

Be aware of clinics offering heavily advertised and discounted procedures and also of aggressive marketing techniques. Listen to your instinct and don’t be afraid to walk away.

At the Cosmetic Medicine Centre we pride ourselves on our commitment to education and being a centre of excellence. Every patient is treated with respect and you can be assured that we listen to you and treat you as an individual. All our staff is well trained and highly skilled, and we only use approved products with a proven track record. We will diagnose your concerns and offer you a tailored treatment plan whether that includes cosmetic injectables, laser rejuvenation, microdermabrasion, photodynamic therapy, peels, cosmeceutical skincare, to name some of the options. And we continue to invest in the latest technology to ensure the best outcomes – our goal is your satisfaction and optimal cosmetic results.
